Fat Loss + Muscle Building After 40: What Actually Works (1 minute read)

Hi Fabulous Friends. A little practical wisdom as we head into the Lunar New Year. 🐎 🐎

What’s the secret to remaining consistent?

It’s not willpower, not discipline, nor “grind harder.”

It’s being flexible.
Flexibility preserves a sense of control. It removes the all-or-nothing pressure and replaces it with options.

On high-friction days — low sleep, long work hours, kid chaos, decision fatigue — don’t quit.

Pivot. 💥

I’ve been experimenting with what James Clear calls “proactive laziness” in Atomic Habits (credit to Oswald Nuckols).

The idea:
Design your training so you can modify demand without throwing in the towel.

Here’s a “hack” for muscle building:

Low-demand isolation movements.
Full range of motion around a single joint.
Minimal CNS drain.
High likelihood of follow-through.

Examples:
• Seated curls
• Lying tricep extensions

Compare that to compound lifts: 🏋️‍♀️
Big bang for your buck, multiple joints, multiple muscle moves.
Higher mental + physical demand.
Squats.
Deadlifts
Push-ups, Presses.

Leverage these powerful and demanding moves on high energy days.
On high-friction days? Adjust downward. 📉

We’ve been told spot training is useless.
True — you can’t target fat loss.
But you can target muscle growth.

Muscle growth in one area still improves total lean mass.

If all you have the capacity for today is 2 sets of curls and/or triceps? That still counts toward your muscle building bank and deposits.

You would never reject a shield just because full body armor wasn’t available.

Muscle is protection.
Muscle is also metabolic insurance.
Muscle is resilience- the ability to bounce back faster from life that tends to knock us over.

Try a “proactively lazy” session this week on a heavy-friction day and tell me how it feels.

You can do it alone — but you’ll go further, faster with women walking the same path.

Hi Fabulous Friends! Most workout programs train strength in the forward and backward plane of motion... Squats. Lunges. Deadlifts.... are all excellent BUT ... our bodies operate in various directions at a thousand different angles. We step sideways to catch our balance. We twist to grab laundry We balance on one foot while carrying groceries. If we don’t train those directions… we lose it and injury occurs. That’s when we start saying: “Why does my back and neck feel stiff?”“Why do I feel...
